Professional summary
PhD Student supervised by Maud van Soest and Ed Rowe at UKCEH, and Phil Haygarth and Jess Davies at Lancaster University.
Zoe previously was based at the University of Aberdeen (BSc Hons Environmental Science), where they gained an academic background in plant and soil science, ecology, and geology. Their thesis topic focussed on soil carbon content in abandoned railway soils along the Scottish central belt, which gave them a strong background understanding in recently disturbed, young, developing soils.
This knowledge has been transferred into their current PhD project looking at the impacts of climate change on nutrients in young arctic soils. Specifically, they are investigating soil phosphorus content in Western Greenland in response to changing environmental conditions such as through permafrost thaw and deglaciation.
Over the 4 1/2 years that the project will run, Zoe will utilise a mixture of in-field measurements, laboratory analysis and experimentation, and modelling, to help to deepen the world's understanding on Greenlandic soil dynamics; and the potential climate change impacts due to global warming.
