The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is home to 500 scientists, based across four UK sites in Bangor, Edinburgh, Lancaster and Wallingford. We also have an office in Accra, Ghana.

Bangor site

The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology's Bangor site is based in the Environment Centre Wales, an environmentally-friendly building funded by means of a partnership between the Natural Environment Research Council and Bangor University. UKCEH and Bangor University explore collaborations under the umbrella theme of Connecting Land, Sea and People.

By road

From A55 and A5, follow A5122 to towards the Menai Bridge. UKCEH at Bangor is on the right, opposite and just past the University Library. From Caernarfon, follow A4087, take first left after railway bridge, then first right at traffic lights into Deiniol Road.

By rail

Bangor railway station is 200 metres from UKCEH at Bangor. The hourly service to London Euston takes about four hours.

By bus

Local buses are run by Arriva.

By car

Travelling east or west along the Edinburgh bypass (A720), come off at the Lothianburn junction and follow the A702 towards Carlisle for about three miles (5km) to Easter Howgate, where a minor road on the left, signposted Bush, leads to the main entrance to Bush Estate. Enter the estate and take the second turning on the right. If travelling on the A701, take the turning marked Bush at the Gowkley Moss roundabout and continue for one mile, past the Pentland Science Park, and turn left at the main entrance to Bush Estate.

By bus and rail

The nearest train station is Edinburgh Waverley. There are one or two services an hour from London Kings Cross, with journey times of 4 hours to 4 hours 40 minutes. Buses to Penicuik are then available on Princes Street (No.15 or 47) or from St Andrews Square, or you can take a taxi. The journey time from the city centre is around 25 minutes by taxi (£25) or 45 minutes by bus (~£1.50).

By air

Edinburgh Airport is about 13 miles (21 km) north-west of Bush. There is a bus service linking the airport and city centre, but there is no direct bus service to Bush Estate. Taxis are available and cost around £20-£25 with a journey time of around 20 minutes (outside rush hour).

 

Lancaster site

The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology's Lancaster site is based within the campus of Lancaster University and forms part of the Lancaster Environment Centre

By road

Leave the M6 at junction 33, take the A6 north towards Lancaster. Continue for 1.75 miles, turn right at the second set of traffic lights into the University (after Galgate village). At the roundabout take the last exit, then first left into Library Avenue.

By rail

Lancaster railway station is on the main West Coast London- Scotland route, about two-and-a-half hours from London. Take a bus or taxi to the University from the station.

By air

There is a direct rail link from the Manchester International Airport (terminal 2) to Lancaster Station. Journey time is between an hour and a half and two hours.

By road

The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology’s Wallingford site is in the village of Crowmarsh Gifford, about 20-30 minutes drive from the following motorway junctions: M4 J8/9, M4 J12 & M40 J6 (from London and the south-east); M4 J13 (from the west/south-west), and M40 J8 (from the midlands/north). From the Crowmarsh Roundabout (junction of the A4130 and A4074), travel west towards Wallingford and then turn right at the mini-roundabout in Crowmarsh Gifford, signed Maclean Building. Express bus services (X39/X40) run twice an hour from central Oxford (journey time 25 minutes) and Reading station (40-45 minutes) to Crowmarsh Gifford.

By rail

The nearest mainline station is Didcot Parkway (six miles). Didcot is about 40 minutes from London Paddington Station. Taxis are available at the station.

By air

London Heathrow airport is about 40 miles / 65 km away. There is a rail-air coach link to Reading station (on the London Paddington to Didcot line) or the Heathrow Express train goes to London Paddington.

The office is our hub for developing and delivering collaborative scientific projects and maintaining strategic relationships with local, national and regional stakeholders across West Africa.
