Nathan's research involves the measurement of fluxes and controls on the carbon and greenhouse gas balance of natural, managed and restored peatlands and their catchments.

He has worked in the past as a Residential Warden on Orkney for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) , at Imperial College London as a Research Associate and Community Scientist, in the Department of Biochemistry, Cambridge University as a Genetic Research Technician, and at UKCEH Wallingford as a Field Technician. 

Nathan has a BSc in Biological Sciences from Salford University and a PhD on Water Loss by Wet Woodland Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and the Open University.
