Professional summary
Lucie works in the Freshwater Restoration and Sustainability Group, Environmental Pressures and Responses Science Area. She gained a Masters in Biological Sciences from Eastern Illinois University and a PhD in Marine Sciences from Dauphin Island Sea Lab (University of South Alabama) focusing on algae cultivation, the ecology of harmful algal blooms and the impact of climate change and mercury bioaccumulation, as well as postdocs from Oklahoma State University and the University of South Alabama.
Before joining UKCEH, Lucie worked nearly 10 years in the biotech industry. She was also a Senior Researcher in Algal Biotechnology at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) where she also served as a Co-lead for the Blue Economy Research Area. From 2019 to 2024, she was a Work Group 5 leader for the European network Ocean4Biotech (COST action CA18238) – a European transdisciplinary networking platform for marine biotechnology.
Lucie is Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Phycology and a member of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) and the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). She has also studied Water and Environment Law and Policy (UNESCO), Environmental Justice (University of East Anglia) and volunteered with WaterAid.
Lucie is passionate about the environment and sustainability and enjoys engaging with the public through citizen science projects. Her favourite quote is "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”.
