George's research is about making sense of the tangled web of uncertain information that underpins how ecosystems provide us with valuable services. He applies systems thinking approaches, novel data analysis and statistical techniques to untangle these problems to provide greater insight.

George is also interested in innovative ways of communicating this complexity to decisions makers using interactive applications and visualisations. He integrates a wide variety of models of ecosystem services supply and demand with landscape technologies. This includes developing an open source R shiny app to allow users to build landscape scenarios and see the impact that their landscape decisions can have on their ecosystem service supply and demand.

George has a PhD in Environmental Science from Lancaster University and previously completed a secondment to DEFRA as a System Research Scientist where he created a platform for the interactive exploration and editing of systems maps across DEFRA, which remains in active use.

Linking natural capital attribute groups to ecosystem services (LiNCAGES) is designed to advise stakeholders on which aspects of their natural capital are most important for supplying the services they value under their chosen context, using evidence from a systematic search of 780 relevant peer-reviewed journal articles. It can also provide a resource for researchers to identify key gaps in this evidence base.

AgLand Explorer allows users to spatially explore how agricultural landscape decisions may impact ecosystem services for great Britain, providing an initial step towards effective policy and land management decisions.
