The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is pleased to welcome two new trustees, Dr Phil Clare and Professor David Hannah, who bring deep expertise in innovation, partnership, sustainability and world-leading environmental science.
Dr Phil Clare joins as a trustee and chair of UKCEH Enterprise Board.
Appointed on 10 December 2025, Phil brings a proven track record in transforming research organisations into engines of innovation and impact. He is CEO of Queen Mary Innovation Ltd and previously led innovation and engagement at the University of Oxford, following earlier roles at the Universities of Bath and Bournemouth. He has served on the Research England Council, chaired Knowledge Exchange UK, and advised across national research and enterprise bodies including ARMA and UUK’s KEC evaluation panel.
With his extensive experience in commercialisation and research partnerships, Phil will help accelerate UKCEH programmes to transform science into solutions.

Professor David Hannah joins as a science trustee
David Hannah joined UKCEH as a trustee on 1 January 2026. He is Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability), Professor of Hydrology, UNESCO Chair in Water Sciences, and Director of the Birmingham Institute for Sustainability & Climate Action at the University of Birmingham.
A leading voice in global climate and freshwater science, David chaired UKRI-NERC Science Committee (2023-2025) and he was recognised in the Reuters’ Top 1000 most influential climate scientists. David plays an active role in UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme; and he is former UK representative to the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, where he now serves as Past President of the International Commission for Surface Water. His work centres on advancing and sharing knowledge on the vital role of water and climate science in society.
David Hannah said: “I am pleased to join UKCEH as a trustee at such a critical time for environmental science. As we confront profound changes to our climate, landscapes, and biodiversity, I am committed to championing the essential role of environmental research in sustaining the ecosystems we all depend on. I look forward to applying my experience in science, strategy and leadership to support UKCEH’s future.”
