National Vegetation Plot Database

Outline

The National Vegetation Plot Database for Great Britain (GBNVPD) acts as the centralised repository for vegetation plot data from Great Britain, the Isle of Man, the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and Bailiwick of Jersey.

The GBNVPD succeeds the UK national vegetation plot database developed by John Rodwell during the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) project and is registered in the Global Vegetation Index Database (GIVD) (Dengler et al., 2011) - http://www.givd.info/ID/EU-GB-007. The database has been submitted to both the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) (Chytrý et al., 2016) and ReSurveyEurope (Knollová et al., 2024).

As of the 27/05/2025 version 1.0 of the GBNVPD contains 277,070 samples from 200,733 plots (208,399 plots when including all nests), from 63 constituent datasets, surveyed between 1949 and 2024.

The GBNVPD has been developed in partnership with a large number of collaborators, including: the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, NatureScot, the James Hutton Institute, the Floodplain Meadows Partnership, and the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland.

Access

As the constituent datasets have a mixture of licences and access regimes, access to the GBNVPD must be requested from the custodian (currently Zeke Marshall).

Submitting Data

Submissions to the GBNVPD are very welcome, and contributors have access to a greater proportion of the GBNVPD datasets by default, please contact the custodian (currently Zeke Marshall) if you wish to submit data.
