Professional summary
Bethan uses satellite Earth Observation data to research interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere. She has a particular interest in processes occurring on subseasonal-to-seasonal timescales (S2S: 2 weeks to 2 months) and in how the land surface can provide additional predictability for S2S forecasts. She also focuses on designing new methods for evaluating Earth System Models using observations.
After graduating from the University of Warwick in 2016 with a Master’s in Mathematics and Physics, Bethan obtained her PhD from the University of Reading, developing a new energy budgeting method to improve our understanding of how numerical models represent the intensification of tropical cyclones. She joined UKCEH in 2020.
Bethan is currently a European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative (ESA CCI) research fellow, investigating land-atmosphere interactions during flash droughts. She is also a member of the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).
