Current work

My research group has a diverse range of research interests. Our main aims are to understand i) what the key drivers causing declines in wildlife are, and ii) develop and evaluate actions to halt or reverse these declines. We study a range of taxa from plants, invertebrates to small mammals and birds and tackle these questions through experimentation, fieldwork, analyses of large datasets, and modelling. We often work in applied systems and try to ensure that our research is policy relevant. We work closely with other scientists, land managers and policy makers and strive to work with colleagues in other disciplines.

My personal research currently focuses on the following areas:

  1. Landscape Ecology: the influence of landscape context and resource availability on the diversity, demography, foraging range and pollination efficacy of wild aculeate pollinators.
  2. Agricultural ecology, particularly agri-enviroment schemes: e.g. using large scale experiments to compare the effects of agri-environment schemes on (i) habitat quality and provision of food resources, and (ii) the abundance, diversity and population dynamics of key farmland taxa.
  3. Restoration of ecosystems: We are interested in improving ecological restoration methods and investigating the links between restoration of biodiversity and enhancement of ecosystem services.
  4. Assessment of ecosystem service provision in a range of systems. Including projects on linking above- and below-ground ecosystem services , impacts of re-wilding and extensification on ecosystem service provision; linking soil biodiversity and processes with above-ground diversity (NERC PDRA).
