Catchment Spatial Information
Rivers are major agents of landscape modification and, in turn, their behaviour is greatly influenced by the catchments through which they flow. The diversity of climate, topography, geology and land use throughout the UK makes for a wide variety of flow regimes.
To assist in understanding the spatial and temporal variations in UK flow patterns, and to help identify catchments of a particular type, this NRFA website module provides (via its Catchment Spatial Information [CSI] pages) spatial descriptions for around 1200 gauged catchments. The descriptions embrace elevation, land use, geology and rainfall.
The spatial information complements the hydrometric material featured in the Station Summary Sheets. The Station Summary Sheets generally include a brief catchment description; these are qualitative, derived from a number of sources, and may not utilise standard nomenclature. For more detailed and quantitative spatial catchment characterisations, users should refer to the CSI pages:
