Current workMy work focuses on different aspects of biodiversity policy, from its development to its implementation, including associated conflicts. Within this context, I am very interested in understanding public attitudes towards biodiversity, including views on biodiversity management, conservation measures and the values associated with biodiversity through the use of qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g. ALTER-Net). I am also interested in understanding the barriers to effective communication of science to the public and policy-makers (RISK) and the role of interfaces between policy-makers and scientists (e.g. BioPlatform, BioStrat and EPBRS). Additionally, I have worked on projects addressing conflicts between biodiversity conservation and other human activities (e.g. BIOFORUM, Living with Environmental Change pilot review). I am currently doing a PhD (University of East Anglia) on “Nature conservation and public participation”, which aims to determine the extent to which democratic processes at the ground level contribute to the desired biodiversity outcomes of the Habitats Directive by evaluating the process and outcomes of participation in three spatially different sites in Scotland. Research interestsMy research interests are mainly focused around three main areas of science: environmental policy-making and implementation in the EU; interactions between scientists, policy-makers and local stakeholders; and public attitudes towards biodiversity. |
