Dr Maria BogdanovaAnimal Population Ecologist
Current workMy current work is part of the CEH's long term study on the Isle of May in Southeast Scotland (IMLOTS) and focuses on understanding the effects of environmental, demographic and phenotypic variation on foraging dynamics and spatial distributions of seabirds (this contributes to Biodiversity Programme Objective BD-1.3). To address these questions, I use a combination of foraging data recorded by various tracking devices and demographic and life-history data collected on the Isle of May over a number of years. Developing a solid understanding of these issues is needed to assess and predict the effects of changes in the marine environment on seabirds, and to mitigate their consequences where appropriate. For example, this work can help identify key foraging areas for seabirds around the breeding colony and at wintering grounds, and provide valuable information for assessing the impact of fisheries and renewable energy projects on these species. It can also contribute to the designation of Marine Protected Areas. Research interestsI am interested in the interacting effects of environmental and intrinsic factors on individuals’ life-histories and resource allocation patterns, and their consequences for processes at the population level. I am also interested in the application of behavioural and population ecology in conservation and policy work. Most of my research is on wild bird populations, using both experimental and correlational approaches. |
