I have a BA in Biology/Ecology from the Open University and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. I joined CEH (then the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology) in 1977 and since 1988 have been a member of the Biosystem Management Group.

My expertise spans a wide range of disciplines in tree physiology, functional ecology and land management. My research is aimed at promoting sustainable use of plants in diverse and valued landscapes, for timber production, minor forest products, agroforestry, habitat regeneration or species conservation. Sustainable use includes the the full range of ecosystem services associated with plants in the landscape.
