Overview

I have 15 years' research experience in hydrochemistry and river water quality, and lead the lowland nutrient hydrochemistry research at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology in Wallingford. I undertake interdisciplinary, fundamental and applied research on the fate, behaviour and transport of nutrients, major ions, trace elements, sediments and emerging contaminants (nanoparticles), to promote sustainable management of surface freshwater resources.

Key research interests

  • Biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in rivers
  • Impacts of nutrient enrichment and mitigation strategies on ecological integrity of river systems - in relation to climate variability, effluent disposal, agricultural practice and changing rural land use
  • Natural aquatic and synthetic nanoparticles and colloids in freshwaters: structure, interactions, behaviour and fate.

Research grants since 2004

  • EPSRC: Novel technologies for in situ environmental monitoring: linking sensor development to improved pollutant transport models (with Reading and Hull Universities)
  • Defra PE0122: Modelling the impact of sediment and phosphorus loss control on catchment water quality (with ADAS and Reading University)
  • Defra PE0116. PARIS: Phosphorus from Agriculture: Riverine Impacts Study ('Linking agricultural land use and practices with a high risk of phosphorus loss to chemical and ecological impacts in rivers') (with ADAS and Leicester University)
  • Strategic Research Council (Denmark): MONITECH project: Development and testing of new cost effective monitoring technologies and planning design for restoration of wetlands (with NERI, Denmark)
  • NERC: Pharmaceutical and cosmetic silica nanoparticles: towards an understanding of their structure, fate and behaviour in aquatic systems (with King's College London and ISIS, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory)
  • Science and Technology Facilities Council: 'Fate of nanoparticles in water'
  • Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils: 'Use of SANS for characterising natural aquatic colloid/nanoparticle dispersions'
