Heidrun's overarching research theme within over 20 years as a freshwater ecologist involves environmental and anthropogenic impacts on aquatic biotic and abiotic factors including food web dynamics. She has extensive experience conducting laboratory as well as mesocosm experiments and leads the UKCEH aquatic mesocosm facility.

Working on climate change and multiple stressors, eutrophication, microplastic, floating solar, Taste and Odour and nutrient imbalance and carbon flux mesocosm experiments shows her broad interest of current research topics. She also manages the long-term freshwater databases from the Cumbrian lakes monitoring and is keen on the analysis and interpretation of freshwater datasets.
