Defra has announced that Prof Rosemary Hails of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) has been appointed by Defra Minister Lord de Mauley as the new chair of the Government’s Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE).

Prof Hails is the Science Director for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Science at CEH and is a current member of ACRE. Her personal research interests include the trade-offs between provisioning and other ecosystem services from agricultural land, the valuation of ecosystem services, the persistence and transmission of insect pathogens, exploiting pathogens for biocontrol, the role of pathogens in regulating insect and plant populations, population ecology of feral crop plants and the risk assessment of genetically modified plants and viruses.

She is chair of the Natural Capital Initiative, a visiting professor at Oxford Brookes University, and a member of the Natural Capital Committee, which reports to the Economic Affairs Committee. She was awarded an MBE for services to environmental research in 2000.
