We have a long history of investigating, monitoring and modelling environmental change, generating evidence-driven solutions to complex environmental challenges. Watch our video to find out more about how our science is having a positive impact.
About the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH)
The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is a world-leading independent research institute, carrying out excellent environmental science with impact.
The invisible pollutant: 200 million
Most nitrogen is a harmless gas that makes up 78% of the air we breathe but too much in the environment can become a major pollutant with far-reaching impacts. In our new Counting the Earth episode, we discuss this invisible pollutant harming ecosystems, air quality and human health globally.
Concern over fall in puffin numbers on the Isle of May
Numbers of puffins at one of the UK’s largest colonies have reduced by around 30% since 2024, a new survey has shown. Seabirds have struggled with the impacts of climate change, including storms and also rising ocean temperatures that have reduced the availability of food sources.
What mountains are telling us about climate change
The recent wildfires in the Cairngorms have highlighted how vulnerable mountain ecosystems are becoming to a changing climate. Dr Jan Dick reflects on how long-term monitoring and international collaboration are providing important insights into their changing ecology.
