Professional summary

Sonja is a land surface modeller with over 15 years experience working in the Climate System (now Land and Climate System) group.

Her research is centred on representing and understanding hydrological processes from soil moisture dynamics and evaporation to lateral flow and how these processes interact with climate. This work spans a range of spatial scales from convection permitting models to regional and continental scale hydrological frameworks.

Much of Sonja's current work centres on East African wetlands where she is investigating the hydrological controls on methane emissions. By coupling the river and overbank inundation to the biogeochemical processes in the land surface models and integrating Earth Observation datasets to constrain and evaluate model performance she is working to better characterise how wetlands dynamics drive GHG fluxes.
