We are looking for an enthusiastic and technically minded individual to join the Atmospheric Chemistry and Effects Science Area as a Research Associate - Field Technician, supporting our measurement programmes in the UK and abroad.
In this role you will be preparing, deploying and maintaining meteorological sensors and equipment for gas and aerosol measurements at local field sites and during short term (e.g. 6-week) intensive measurement campaigns, as well as in the laboratory. You will contribute to the development of new laboratory experiments, field site infrastructures (electrical supplies, towers, cabins) and the logistics of shipping or transporting instrumentation to overseas deployments.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work on detachment in the UK, Europe and overseas (e.g. China, India and Africa), therefore a willingness to travel is essential.
The main duties include assistance with field campaign planning and logistics (in the UK and overseas), maintenance of scientific instruments, fabrication of bespoke light electrical equipment (e.g. air-conditioned enclosure), and sundries tasks supporting the day-to-day activities of the research groups such as placing purchase orders and transporting equipment between sites. Some travelling, both domestic and overseas, might be expected.
Skills/ Knowledge Required
- A good degree (2:1)in an appropriate subject or technical qualification
- Willingness to work in the field under adverse conditions
- Full driving licence
- Aptitude for learning to develop data acquisition programs
- Aptitude to operate and fix instrumentation
- Scientifically numerate and with good mathematical skills
- Able to work at height to carry out work on towers

- Operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art scientific equipment (Aerodyne QCL, mass spectrometer, infrared gas analysers, dataloggers)
