Research Associate Climate and Land Surface Scientist - based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire

About the role

We are offering a three year Research Associate position in the Climate System group at CEH Wallingford to evaluate observed and modelled land-atmosphere interactions.

The Climate System Group at CEH studies the role of the land surface in the global climate system. They are a multi-disciplinary group whose research includes meteorology, hydrology, plant physiology and biodiversity. Their research questions are addressed through combinations of climate and land surface modelling, in situ observations and remote sensing (i.e., satellites, aircraft, UAVs).

Main duties of the role include:

  • developing and applying new techniques that use earth observation data to quantify key land-atmosphere interactions
  • integrating these methods into software model evaluation tools
  • using these techniques to evaluate weather forecasting and climate models
  • providing quality controlled climate scenarios based on historical measurements and future projections for UK impacts assessment
  • writing peer-reviewed scientific papers describing research results
  • presenting these results at national and international conferences
  • collaborating with project partners in the UK and overseas.

You should be highly numerate and enjoy the challenge of researching the climate system.  You must have at least a 2.1 Degree in either the physical sciences or mathematics, plus a PhD in a numerate discipline, ideally meteorology or atmospheric physics.

You should have experience communicating your research to your peers and to senior managers, both orally and through written reports and scientific papers.

You should be able to demonstrate excellent team-working skills and be able to work independently to short deadlines.
