Ecosystem Science

Our work on biogeochemistry and ecosystem function is based at the Bangor research site. CEH specialises in biogeochemistry research employing techniques at a range of scales from cellular to the whole catchment, and a mix of approaches from long-term monitoring to surveys and dynamic modelling. Specific strengths include the transformation and transport of nutrients and pollutants in soil; their transfer to streams and rivers, from source to sea; and the impact of ozone, acidity and nitrogen, climate change and land management on the way ecosystems function.

The results of our work are used to help advise policy-makers and resource managers who are trying to develop more sustainable approaches to the management of our natural resources. One example is our work on critical loads for the development of pollutant abatement strategies through the UK National Focal Centre for Critical Loads Mapping and Modelling.
