Land Cover Map 2000: Calibration and Accuracy

Mapping divides a world which is continuously variable in space and time into individully distinct areas of supposedly uniform cover. It is important to understand the consequences of such generalisation – how scale, resolution and class-selection relate to features on the ground. We must assess how successfully the chosen rules of generalisation are applied.

CEH has carried out a calibration with the CS2000 field survey which provides information to assess the quality of LCM2000.

  • Structural patterns are usually similar
  • Exceptions occur where the lower spatial resolution of LCM2000 affects the detail
  • Where classes differ, they usually show confusion between similar types: bracken and acid grass, rough and semi-natural grass, conifers and broadleaved trees
