Land Cover Map 2000: Dataset Product Description

Land Cover Map 2000 (LCM2000) is provided in several different Product Versions.

1. The Vector database. This is the Core dataset, data is provided as polygons or land parcels, and each parcel has a list of attributes attached to it.

  • The standard level of detail is LEVEL 2, which provides 26 target/subclasses. We expect that this will be the most widely used version of the dataset.
  • LEVEL 3 data is available, giving a higher level of detail, but quality of detail may vary in different areas of the country, requiring expert interpretation. LEVEL 3 data will only be provided by special arrangement with CEH staff, as more user support will be required.

2. The Raster dataset has been derived from the Core Vector database, and provides data as pixels. There are two resolutions, 25 metres, and 1 kilometre. The 1km version is available in two forms:

  • 1km dominant values.
  • 1km CIS (Countryside Information System) format. This will be provided to licensed users of the CIS, from the CIS www site NB. The LCM2000 raster dataset is not directly comparable with the LCM1990 dataset, as it has been constructed by different methods. It is NOT suitable for estimating change over the 10-year period.

Data Formats

Vector formats: The standard output format is as Arc View shape files. Other export formats are available for Arc Info and Map Info systems.

Raster formats: will not have the attribute lists attached to each parcel, only Broad Habitat classification/class list.

  • If using this data within Arc View, the spatial analyst extension will be required.
