Biogeochemistry Topic 3

Managing threats to environment and health

In Topic 3 (BG-3), the Biogeochemistry Programme develops risk assessment and management tools for carbon, renewable energy and pollutants to protect and enhance ecosystem function. Examples of BG-3 research projects are listed opposite.

The science of Topic BG-3 is delivered through four inter-related objectives:

  • BG-3.1 Develop temporally and spatially explicit risk assessment tools for the environment and human health
  • BG-3.2 Provide the evidence base for setting Environment Quality Standards, environmental appraisal and remediation methods to enable the sustainable management of ecosystems
  • BG-3.3 Deliver effective advice, models and applied science to provide the evidence base for policy developments
  • BG-3.4 Produce models, maps, databases and inventories to assess compliance with national and international policies and evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies

These activities inform and are informed by their counterparts in the Biodiversity and Water Programmes and the Environmental Information Data Centre.

Topic BG-3's broad range of research is supported by stakeholders who include agencies and governmental bodies, such as Natural England, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.
