Biodiversity Topic 3

Managing biodiversity and ecosystem services in a changing environment

Biodiversity Topic 3 (BD-3) develops and delivers practical and effective strategies to conserve and restore biodiversity and its associated ecosystem functions and services. By developing and meeting four inter-related research objectives Topic 3 aims to:

  • BD-3.1 Develop methods to quantify the link between biodiversity and ecosystem goods and services
  • BD-3.2 Develop and test practical measures to ameliorate the effects of anthropogenic drivers on ecosystem processes and services
  • BD-3.3 Develop integrated environmental assessments and modelling
  • BD-3.4 Provide science-based advice on the sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystems

These activities are integrated with relevant Topics in the Biogeochemistry and Water Programmes and the Environmental Information Data Centre.

Topic BD-3 undertakes research which is supported by a wide range of stakeholders which include farmers and landowners, industry and a range of agencies and governmental bodies, such as Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Countryside Council for Wales, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, the National Biodiversity Network and the European Union.
