Biodiversity Topic 1

Observations, patterns and predictions for biodiversity

Biodiversity Topic 1 (BD-1) delivers long-term, large-scale monitoring and experiments for the collection, provision, analysis and modelling of biodiversity data. By developing and meeting four inter-related research objectives, BD-1 aims to:

  • BD-1.1 Improve capability for data collection, and interpret patterns of biodiversity
  • BD-1.2 Record and assess changes in the abundance and distribution of biodiversity
  • BD-1.3 Detect and attribute the causes and consequences of environmental change
  • BD-1.4 Quantify and model interactions between biodiversity and environmental change

These activities are integrated with relevant Topics in the Biogeochemistry and Water  Programmes and the Environmental Information Data Centre.

Topic BD-1 undertakes research that is supported by a wide range of stakeholders - from members of the public who submit observations and undertake species recording to a range of agencies and governmental bodies who provide financial support, such as Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Countryside Council for Wales, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, the National Biodiversity Network and the European Union.
