Biodiversity Objective BD-3.4

Science-based advice on the sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystems

Biodiversity Objective BD-3.4 contributes to CEH Science Strategy Challenge VI (to identify strategies and control measures to mitigate impacts of environmental change on ecosystems, ecosystem services and human health) by providing science-based advice to help identify strategies and control measures that will reduce the impact of societal pressures on the natural environment.

BD-3.4 aims to:

  • Communicate scientific evidence for land management practices that maintain and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services for more effective inclusion into national assessments and policy-making.
  • Explore effective strategies to resolve (potential) conflicts and to successfully implement new environmental management policies by working with social scientists, economists and practitioners.
  • Develop an understanding of the critical trade-offs between different ecosystem services in relation to relevant policy options at different spatial and temporal scales.

These activities benefit from improved data exchange across CEH coordinated by the Environmental Information Data Centre. This will ensure that a wide a range of environmental factors and the consequences of management regimes are considered by policy-makers.
