Biodiversity Objective BD-3.1

Methods to quantify the link between biodiversity and ecosystem goods and services

Biodiversity Objective BD-3.1 contributes to CEH Science Strategy Challenge VI (to quantify the impact of environmental change on natural resources) by providing essential information to enable the development of improved strategies and control measures to ensure the continued supply of ecosystem services.

BD-3.1 aims to:

  • Contribute to development of a semantic framework for defining and measuring ecosystem services
  • Undertake mechanistic experiments to quantify the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function and services
  • Determine how the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function and services vary across scales ranging from plot to landscape to national scales

These activities are integrated with other research areas in the Biodiversity, Biogeochemistry and Water Programmes and the Environmental Information Data Centre. This enables CEH to integrate ecosystems work from across the Programmes and contribute directly to BD-3.3.
