Sound knowledge about the state of the British countryside is fundamental to policies for conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. The botanical data from the 1978 and 1990 Countryside Surveys have been analysed in order to detect long-term ecological change in Great Britain. Indicators of Botanical Diversity have also been identified as the basis for analysing whether the trends detected will have continued after 1990, as part of the Countryside Survey 2000 programme. These results are described in this report, Volume 2 of the ECOFACT research report series.
