The Coalburn research catchment in the Kielder Forest, Britain’s largest forest, is a long-term co-operative project to study the effects of upland afforestation on water supply. The tree species planted, the peaty soil types in the catchment, and the need for extensive ground cultivation and drainage to aid tree establishment are typical of many upland forests, with such land use having a major impact on water resources. The project has resulted in many important points about the hydrological impacts of plantation forestry.
