This document summarises the headline findings from the UK results of Countryside Survey 2007, carried out by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. The results of the survey are used to support a range of objectives, from monitoring climate change to improving scientific understanding of the countryside.

  • Has botanical diversity in the countryside changed?
  • Has the biodiversity of arable land changed?
  • Has the area and condition of lowland agricultural grassland changed?
  • Has the length and condition of hedges changed?
  • Has the area and condition of woodland changed?
  • Has the area and condition of moorland, heathland and bog changed?
  • Has the condition of freshwater habitats continued to improve?
  • Have there been detectable effects of air pollution and nutrient inputs on vegetation and soils?
  • Has average carbon concentration in soils (0-15cm) changed?
  • Have climate change impacts been detected in the UK countryside?
