30 June 2011

UK Land Cover MapWatch the launch webinar at 11am on 7 July

A new Land Cover Map for the UK will be made available on Wednesday 6 July 2011. (Read the news story here)

Land Cover Map 2007 (LCM2007) is the latest land cover map to be produced by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) on behalf of the Countryside Survey partnership. It provides land cover information for the entire UK based on the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Broad Habitats which are widely used in monitoring and reporting on our countryside. LCM2007 has been derived from satellite images, digital cartography, ground reference data and ancillary datasets.

Release of the LCM2007 products will be accompanied by an open access Webinar taking place at 11am on Thursday 7 July 2011. The webinar will introduce the new products and provide an opportunity for participants to pose questions to the Land Cover Map team, including speakers from the scientific team at CEH including Dr Dan Morton, lead scientist on the Land Cover Map team, and a senior policy representative from Defra. Professor Mark Bailey, CEH Director, will introduce the webinar.

Further details of the webinar are available here.

The two previous CEH land cover maps, LCM1990 and LCM2000 have been successfully used by government departments and agencies throughout the UK, county councils, charities and commissions and also environmental management bodies. The improved thematic and spatial accuracy of LCM2007 increase its potential and, in conjunction with other data, LCM2007 will have many applications including ecosystem service assessment, conservation and landscape planning, carbon accounting, and flood risk assessment.

The datasets will be available (under licence) in different formats to suit various user needs.
