Key science-policy event on European biodiversity and ecosystem research
4 February 2013
A major conference to discuss the science needed to support the European Union’s 2020 Biodiversity Strategy will be held in Belgium in April. The event is hosted by ALTER-Net, a Long-Term Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Awareness Research Network, together with the European Commission.
CEH is one of the 26 partner institutes of ALTER-Net and is among those helping to organise the event, along with Belgian lead organisers INBO. Several CEH staff are also expected to attend the four-day event, along with others involved in biodiversity and ecosystem services research, policymakers, decision-makers, land managers and conservationists.
As a science-policy interface network, ALTER-Net aims to help the EU realize the objectives and targets of its 2020 Biodiversity Strategy by providing scientific knowledge, for example, by pointing out possible weaknesses, opportunities and necessities, and by helping to find solutions and evidence-based actions.
The conference will start with statements and accompanying questions prepared jointly by ALTER-Net and EU representatives for each of the six Biodiversity targets. Half-day sessions on each target will be held during the event, featuring a mix of oral presentations and workshops. A number of side events are also planned.
Further details can be found on the conference website. Registration for the event is open until 22 March 2013.
The conference takes place between 15-18 April 2013 in Ghent, Belgium.
