  • Spring 2010 - The new UK Land Cover Map will be released as part of the Countryside Survey programme carried out by CEH. More details here (external link).
  • 9th-10th February 2010 - The 42nd Robson Meeting is due to take place on 9th and 10th February. The keynote speaker will be Baroness Young, who will be talking about "Tomorrow's Challenges". The Robson Meeting is the only major UK event dedicated to developments in aquatic weed control, the biology and ecology of aquatic plants, invasive species and riparian management issues. Awards

  • 16th October 2009 - Environment Centre Wales, the home of CEH's staff in Wales, was commended in the RICS awards Grand Final 2009 in the Sustainability category. Read a CEH news story about the event.
  • 14th June 2008 - CEH Director of Resource and Operations, Brian Butler, was awarded an MBE for services to Environmental Science in the Queen's Birthday Honours list 2008 (external link).
  • 1st March 2008 - CEH scientist Dr Chris van der Gast was presented with the prestigious award of 'Technology paper of the year 2007' from the journal Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T). His winning paper was a result of a collaboration with scientists from Cambridge University. More information can be found here (external link).

Recent events

  • 7th December 2009 - Side event on Nitrogen at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP-15 in Copenhagen. For more information about Nitrogen and climate change visit the following: Snared in a homemade 'NitroNet' (BBC News Online) and Managing the European Problem.
  • October 2009 - The Scripps Institute of Oceanography, USA, hosted a conference “Water in a Warming World.”  The attendees included experts in hydrological and climate sciences, economics, and public policy. The participants looked at building a lasting scientific community focused on water resources in regional watersheds that are especially hard hit by climate change, including the Western US, north-western China, India, and possibly Africa. UK participants included Centre for Ecology & Hydrology scientist Dr Nick Reynard.
  • 20th-24th July 2009, Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Builth Wells - The results for Wales from the 2007 Countryside Survey were launched at the Royal Welsh Show on the CEH stand. Countryside Survey is a unique study or ‘audit’ of the natural resources of the UK’s countryside. Read a CEH news story about the event.
  • 30th June-4th July 2009, Royal Society Summer Exhibition, London - The invasive harlequin ladybird threatens more than 1000 species in Britain. With help from the public, the Harlequin Ladybird Survey is monitoring the harlequin’s spread and is exploring ways of reducing its threat to native biodiversity. At the Summer Exhibition stand learn how to identify ladybirds and see them behaving badly, get up close to them under the microscope, and find out how you can catch the recording bug!   • 16th June 2009 - The 30th Anniversary of the extinction of the Large Blue Butterfly in Britain and the 25th Anniversary of its successful re-introduction due to the efforts of a large partnership of conservation organisations directed by CEH science. Read a news story about the event.
  • 15th June 2009 - Sustainable Cities. Partnership event between the Natural Capital Initiative and the British Library, sponsored by the Science Council. This event, featuring a panel discussion, networking reception and research showcase, will explore how science can inform policy to ensure sustainable urban development. Panel members include Ken Livingstone of Progressive London, Sara Parkin of Forum for the Future and William Bird of Natural England.   • 29th April-1st May 2009, London - Valuing our Life Support Systems, part of the Natural Capital Initiative led by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and Institute of Biology. The link between the health of our environment and the health of our economy is becoming clearer. There is no doubt that a sustainable approach to development needs to be adopted, but gaps in research, policy and its implementation need to be filled. This three-day symposium for representatives from government departments and agencies, parliament, academia and research, businesses and NGOs aims to identify these gaps and recommend solutions.   • 19th March 2009 - Science Activity Day, Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, Lancaster - A day of organized activities for year 5 & 6 Primary School Pupils. Some 70 children from local schools attended "Discovering DNA"; investigating microbes living in the "Underwater World" of our lakes and getting outdoors to learn about the "Tough life of Plants" and how they are adapted to their habitat. They also took a Laboratory Tour where they found out about the Birds of Prey Monitoring Scheme and why we analyse so much water.
  • 28th-29th January 2009 - Towards Shared Environmental Information in Europe. A workshop at CEH's HQ site in Wallingford, UK to to discuss the opportunities and challenges for research that are posed by the development of European-wide environmental information systems. Keynote talks by staff from leading European Environment organisations including the European Environment Agency and the EU Joint Research Centre. More details here. Full programme now available.
  • 18th November 2008 - Countryside Survey is a unique study or ‘audit’ of the natural resources of the UK’s countryside which has been carried out at regular intervals since 1978. The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology undertake the Survey on behalf of a number of government departments and agencies. Initial results and analyses from the 2007 Survey were launched at an event in London in Autumn 2008. Read a news story about this event.
