Research Interests

My post at CEH as an air pollution modeller involves computer modelling studies of air pollution at a national scale (with the FRAME model), including gaseous emissions, chemical transformation, diffusion and wet and dry deposition processes. My research focuses primarily on the deposition of nitrogen and sulphur compounds. My work is applied to advise government policy on future emissions abatement and to the regional authorities on regulation of pollutant emissions.

I cooperate closely with the University of Edinburgh on development of new techniques for computer simulation of air pollution over the UK (with the EMEP4UK model) and with the Universities of Wrocław (Poland) and the Chinese Agricultural University to support the development of national-scale air pollution modelling facilities in central Europe and the North China Plains.

I act as a supervisor to PhD research students and post-doctoral research associates based at these institutes.

I cooperate with Imperial College, London, on integrated assessment modelling to find the the most cost-effective pollutant emissions abatement strategies to protect natural ecosystems and human health and with the British Atmospheric Data Centre on development of software for statistical analysis of wind data.

I have a long-term interest in measurements and modelling of wet deposition of pollutants by rain and snow and formation of orographic cloud. In previous employment I was involved in instrumented aircraft experiments including measurement of radiative transfer through clouds and chemical transformation of air masses. I have experience with running a meteorological and hydro-chemical monitoring station at a hill site. My experience with numerical simulation includes both the development and testing of a new non-hydrostatic mesoscale model and the development of process models to investigate cloud chemical reactions and orographic precipitation.
